The travel and leisure sector is an exciting one to work in for many people, and offers a wide variety of opportunities. This broad sector offers jobs in travel bookings companies, with hotels, in heritage, sport and the arts. Many people will find a job in this sector to match their personal interests. Travel jobs are often based abroad or offer travel opportunities.
You can enter the travel industry at a variety of levels. For graduates, larger companies often run management training schemes, allowing a direct route into more senior roles. It may also be possible to work up to those roles from more junior positions. Front-line roles working directly with the public have varied entry requirements, depending on the job. Many employers will recognise experience gained in other industries in customer service or administration as relevant. Often, on the job training such as NVQs is available. Roles in the arts and heritage sectors will normally require applicants to demonstrate a strong interest in the area. Specialist qualifications and languages (for travel jobs) can often be a big bonus. Progression tends to be from junior management or customer service roles up to more senior management, with the right experience and drive.
