All about Rail Jobs

It’s every little boys dream to be Train Driver, with many a childhood spent marvelling over the huge giants rolling through rail crossings bringing immense excitement. A lot of little boys eventually grow out of that, but for many, that dream never dies.

Jobs in the Rail industry include everything from Train Drivers and Signalman, to Engineers, Customer Service Advisors and Health and Safety Advisors, with each role complementing each other in creating a solid service of reliability to the general public who use our rail services every single of day to commute to work or as part of their leisure trips.

Qualifications depend ultimately on the role, however most areas offer apprenticeships that allow young people to work and gain relevant NVQ’s in Rail Engineering and Rail Services, to help forward their career in their desired field. Drivers are also trained on the job, as the best way to learn how to drive any vehicle is first-hand. Engineering roles may require an Engineering degree.

Due to the amounts of training that is necessary, and available within the various areas of the rail industry, there is plenty of opportunity for career progression with many roles being predominantly customer-based.
