Wide knowledge of a specialist subject matter and practical expertise are prerequisites of being a consultant. The field is large in scope. It covers every aspect from design to medicine, public affairs to waste management, management to environment, engineering to marketing, biotechnology to logistics.

Before you become a consultant you must become expert in your field and be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge. It is common, though not essential, that consultants are educated to a high standard.

At times consultants are referred to as contractors, in particular because their employment contract refers to a particular task or is limited to a particular time frame. Consultants are generally self-employed or work for a consulting company. They engage with multiple clients. The quality of the consulting service is rarely tangible and is dependent upon the quality of individuals providing consultation. Differentiation is often difficult. Where similar or identical services are provided customers may find it difficult to choose one advisor over another.

In the UK there are professional organisations such as The Institute of Business Consulting, The Association of Professional Compliance Consultants, Institute of Consulting, Chartered Management Institute offer qualifications and assurance that consultants adhere to ethical and professional standards.
