All about Charity and Non-Profit Jobs

In 2011 there are around a quarter of a million charity organisations in the UK. That number increases if you include faith groups, trade organisations, housing associations, mutual organisations and independent schools. Typically these organisations perform the same sorts of tasks as any other business or for profit association. It is a hugely popular and exciting sector with many job roles shared with other industries and sectors.

Training qualifications depend on the level of knowledge and skill required. Accountants, teachers, administrators, clerks, sales and marketing staff, IT and HR personnel, customer services, logistics, engineering, retail work - are all skills sought on the charity job market. Employment opportunities attract commercial salary rates.

In addition there are fund-raising roles found more often in this sector. The Institute of Fundraising provides information about professionally recognised qualifications such as Certificate of Fundraising or Diplomas.

This sector has something to offer people starting out as well as those seeking a second career.

Useful sources of information are the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) and Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action (NICVA).
